About

Twelve Cabins is dedicated to probing the minds behind the world’s best independent horror cinema.

Conceptually derived in Halloween 2014, Twelve Cabins began with a group of friends accumulating the best horror shorts they could find on the internet, curating an evening where local horror fans could sit and enjoy the best scares from around the globe. Jump forward to Friday 13th December 2019, Twelve Cabins is now set up to bring this concept to a wider audience, giving them a peak behind the curtain whilst offering filmmakers a platform where their work can be exhibited.

Our Subgenres

Horror is full of different types of films and we wanted a simple, concise way of reflecting these for our audience to understand. We decided to split our films into four separate subgenres which reflect the overarching themes present in horror. These categories certainly aren’t definitive as we believe genres are evolving in their definition. Our subgenres are here to offer our audience a way of navigating the pages of Twelve Cabins, allowing them a simpler way of tracking down certain films that align with their taste. They are as follows:

The Monstrous‘: Put simply, a film that features a monster. That could be vampires, werewolves, zombies, aliens, you name it. Usually featuring a protagonist, or protagonists, facing a monstrous manifestation in some form.

The Disturbed‘: Predominantly slashers, psychological horror and thrillers. Horror from the ‘real world’. Usually featuring an antagonistic force which could be described as being ‘disturbed’. Myers, Vorhees, Lecter and Bates would all be very much at home here.

The Paranormal‘: Horror that exists beside our place of existence. Think ghosts, hauntings, the occult, devils and demons. Rather than being entirely monstrous, the horror of the paranormal is adjacent to our reality, neither part of it or totally distinct from it. Sometimes seen as the superstitious. Folk horror and films about cultish behaviour definitely feature here too.

Non-Fiction: This is our space for documentary work and interviews with fellow horror aficionados. As much as we like to discuss horror films, we also like to know more about the work being done by horror fans, critics, podcasters and academics. Our space to get nerdy with fellow nerds.
